Lázaro’s Late Penalty Seals 1-0 Instituto Win Over Riestra

Instituto Cordoba etched another chapter in their home fortress legend, grinding out a nervy 1-0 victory over Deportivo Riestra in Liga Profesional Argentina’s Clausura – Round 14 through Jeremías Lázaro’s late penalty, a result that felt inevitable yet agonizingly delayed under the Cordoban floodlights.

Instituto’s Relentless Siege

The Estadio Juan Domingo Perón shook from the first whistle as Instituto laid siege with 77% possession, Petr Čech-era Chelsea numbers in a league where chaos usually reigns. Matías Gallardo’s angled drive forced Mauricio Arzamendia into a smart save after 12 minutes, the first of 18 Instituto attempts that would test Riestra’s resolve. But the visitors’ five-man backline held firm, throwing bodies at shots – seven blocked in total – while Alex Luna’s yellow card for a frustrated lunge hinted at creeping anxiety.

Riestra’s Resistance Holds… Until VAR Intervenes

Gabriel Obredor’s booking for scything down Jonathan Galván before halftime epitomized Riestra’s desperation, yet Diego Flores’ men entered the break goalless despite 13 corners. The woodwork spared Riestra again in the 77th minute when Galván’s header crashed off the bar, only for VAR to chalk it off for an invisible foul. But justice came four minutes later – Leonel Mosevich’s tumbling run provoking Facundo Miño’s clumsy challenge. VAR confirmed the penalty, and Lázaro sent Arzamendia the wrong way to spark pandemonium in the stands.

Clausura Implications

This was more than three points for Instituto – it’s consecutive home wins now, their midfield trio of Gallardo, Abregú and substitute Nicolás Guerra strangling Riestra into submission with 433 total passes. For Riestra, surviving on 23% possession and just 0.19 xG, relegation worries intensify after failing to register a shot on target until the 89th minute. The Clausura’s unforgiving grind continues, but tonight belonged to Cordoba’s patience and Lázaro’s ice-cool nerve.
