Analysis The numbers behind the result
Egypt stifle Masry despite dominance in possession
The 1-1 draw slightly favoured AL Masry, who outperformed their expected goals (1.02) with a penalty conversion, while National Bank of Egypt underperformed their xG of 1.55. Despite dominating possession (62%) and outshooting Masry 17 to eight, Egypt struggled to convert their chances into goals, with only three of their 17 shots on target. Their wastefulness in front of goal proved costly, as Masry remained clinical with four shots on target, including Salah Mohsen’s 42nd-minute penalty.
Egypt’s attacking inefficiency was highlighted by their low shot conversion rate (5.9%), despite creating nine shots inside the box and eight outside. Masry, meanwhile, relied on defensive solidity and counterattacks, winning four corners and committing 14 fouls to disrupt the flow of the game. Ahmed Yasser Rayan’s 52nd-minute penalty levelled the score, but Egypt failed to capitalise on their dominance thereafter.
The decisive stat was Egypt’s shot accuracy: just 17.6% of their total attempts were on target, compared to Masry’s 50%. This lack of precision ultimately cost them the win despite their superior control of the game.
