Fiorentina Fight Back to Deny Atalanta 2-2 in Serie A Thriller

Fiorentina Show Grit in 2-2 Serie A Standoff with Atalanta

The Artemio Franchi erupted in relief as Fiorentina twice clawed back to earn a 2-2 draw against Atalanta in a breathless Serie A encounter that crackled with second-half drama.

Atalanta Strike First Through De Ketelaere

Charles De Ketelaere silenced Florence in the 41st minute, finishing coolly after Nicola Zalewski’s incisive pass sliced open Fiorentina’s defence. The Belgian’s sixth goal of the campaign looked destined to send Atalanta in ahead against the run of play – the hosts had dominated 60% possession but lacked cutting edge until De Ketelaere’s sucker punch.

Fiorentina’s Lightning Response

Whatever Paolo Vanoli said at halftime worked instantly. Six minutes after the restart, Alieu Njie arrowed home from Álex Jiménez’s cross before turning provider for João Mário’s ruthless 61st-minute strike. The Portuguese full-back had been a constant threat – his second assist of the season sparking bedlam in the Curva Fiesole.

Zalewski Haunts Viola Again

But Atalanta refused to die. Thirteen minutes later, Zalewski repaid De Ketelaere’s earlier favour, rifling home from the Belgian’s cutback to make it 2-2. The Polish winger’s third goal in five games left David de Gea rooted – a bitter blow for Fiorentina after their 26-shot onslaught.

What This Means for Both Sides

For Fiorentina, this was two points dropped after 1.67 xG and 26 attempts. Yet coming from behind twice shows the resilience Vanoli is instilling after last season’s Europa League heartbreak. Atalanta will rue surrendering control despite De Ketelaere’s brilliance – their 40% possession a rare subplot in Sarri’s usually dominant sides.

Both teams remain unbeaten in three, but neither will be entirely satisfied as the Derby dell’Appennino looms for La Dea next week, while Fiorentina travel to Monza searching for that killer instinct.
