Club America, Tijuana Battle to Chaotic 1-1 Liga MX Stalemate

Club America and Club Tijuana fought to a breathless 1-1 draw in their Liga MX Apertura clash, a match that simmered with tension before exploding into late chaos with a red card and VAR controversy.

Club Tijuana’s Early Lightning Strike

Elias Manoel shocked the Estadio Azteca into silence after just 12 minutes, pouncing on Jesus Gomez’s incisive pass to slot past Guillermo Ochoa. The visitors’ defensive shell had been cracked open with surgical precision.

Club America’s Swift Response

Miguel Borja answered seven minutes later, rising to meet Isaias Violante’s whipped cross to make it 1-1. America’s 72% first-half possession became a monsoon of pressure – 13 shots in the box before halftime alone – but Tijuana’s five-man bunker held firm.

The Battle Turns Ugly

Jesus Gomez’s 26th-minute yellow set the tone. By full time, Tijuana had collected four yellows – including Gomez’s VAR-overturned red at 90’+2, only for the referee to brandish it again a minute later after consulting the monitor. America’s Kevin Alvarez joined the book in stoppage time as frayed tempers ruled.

What This Means for Liga MX’s Apertura

A point does little for either side’s playoff push. America will rue 28 total shots yielding just one goal, while Tijuana’s late discipline collapse nearly cost them. Both teams now face must-win matches to keep pace in the congested Liga MX table.
