Chery Rescues Nijmegen in 1-1 Europa League Stalemate

NEC Nijmegen 1-1 Levski Sofia: Europa League Drama Unfolds

NEC Nijmegen clawed back from a goal down to share the spoils with Levski Sofia in a 1-1 draw during Matchday 2 of the UEFA Europa League. The deafening roar from 12,000 fans at Goffertstadion told the story – relief for the hosts, frustration for the visitors who came within 25 minutes of a famous victory.

Levski Sofia’s VAR Heartbreak and Breakthrough

The Bulgarians thought they’d struck first in the 17th minute when Francisco Everton wheeled away in celebration, only for VAR to cruelly chalk it off. Their pain turned to joy 18 minutes later as Reinaldo Nascimento Satorno pounced on Svetoslav Vutsov’s pass to slot home against the run of play. Nijmegen’s Noe Lebreton saw yellow for a desperate tackle moments before, setting the tone for a first half where possession (51%) didn’t translate to penetration for Schreuder’s side.

Nijmegen’s Second-Half Resurgence

The Dutch outfit emerged transformed, unleashing 11 second-half shots to Levski’s 3. Their pressure told in the 64th minute when veteran Tjaronn Chery lashed home from outside the box – one of NEC’s 7 long-range attempts finally paying off. Velázquez responded with a double substitution, throwing on fresh legs in Armstrong Oko-Flex and Gasper Trdin, but Nijmegen’s 2.17 xG told the story of their growing dominance.

Tactical Tug-of-War in Closing Stages

Both managers emptied their benches in the final 15 minutes, Nijmegen introducing former Ajax star Dušan Tadić while Levski sacrificed goalscorer Reinaldo for defensive stability. The visitors’ 8 saves to NEC’s 1 underscored their resilience, but Chery’s moment of quality ensured the points were shared in this Europa League group stage thriller.

For Nijmegen, it’s a valuable lesson in converting dominance after racking up 18 shots. Levski will rue their missed chance to steal all three points, but their organized display suggests they’ll be no pushovers in this competition. Both sides now turn their attention to Matchday 3 knowing every point could prove crucial in the quest for knockout football.
