10-Man Brann Survive Mad Scare to Edge Lincoln 2-1

Brann Survive Red Card Chaos in Europa Conference League Opener

Brann overcame an early red card and a second-half scare to edge Lincoln Red Imps 2-1 in a frenetic Europa Conference League League Stage opener. Niklas Castro’s double, including an 81st-minute winner, rescued the Norwegians after Kike Gomez had punished Neraysho Kasanwirjo’s first-half dismissal – but only after Lincoln’s Tjay De Barr saw red himself in a match that twisted violently on referee decisions.

Brann’s Nightmare Start

The hosts’ plans disintegrated after just six minutes when Kasanwirjo clattered into De Barr for an early yellow. Seventeen minutes later, the Dutch defender lunged recklessly into another challenge, leaving Slovenian referee Nejc Kajtazovic no choice but to brandish red. Brann’s 72% possession meant nothing – they were facing 67 minutes with ten men against a Lincoln side who’d already parked a back five. But astonishingly, the Gibraltar champions failed to capitalise before halftime, mustering just one blocked shot despite their numerical advantage.

Lincoln’s Brief Glory

The second half erupted in the 59th minute when Gomez peeled off at the back post to volley home Nano’s cross. Lincoln’s lead lasted precisely 120 seconds. De Barr, already on a yellow for dissent, hacked down Eggert Gudmundsson and received his marching orders – evening the numbers at 10-v-10. Brann smelled blood. Castro pounced on a loose ball three minutes later, slamming home from eight yards to level. The Norwegian’s celebration – roaring at the home fans while thumping the badge – told you everything about the shift in momentum.

Castro Seals Brann’s Great Escape

With both teams exhausted, substitutes made the difference. Joachim Soltvedt’s 81st-minute cross found Castro ghosting between defenders, his glancing header sparking pandemonium at Brann Stadion. Lincoln’s resistance broke – their xG of just 0.39 reflected a performance leaning heavily on Brann’s indiscipline. As the final whistle blew, Castro collapsed to his knees, physically spent but the hero of a win that felt more like salvation than celebration.

For Brann, this was a statement of resilience after last season’s European disappointments. For Lincoln, there’s pride in pushing a favoured opponent so close – but regret at squandering a golden chance after Kasanwirjo’s implosion. Both face crucial Matchday 2 fixtures knowing group stage progression could hinge on handling pressure better than they handled each other’s tackles tonight.
