Cornelius double crushes Braga as Copenhagen triumph 3-0

FC Copenhagen blew away SC Braga 3-0 in their Europa Conference League group stage opener, Andreas Cornelius delivering the killer blows after Mohamed Elyounoussi broke Portuguese resistance with a second-half strike that ignited Parken Stadium.

FC Copenhagen’s patient power pays off

For 49 minutes, Braga’s 64% possession felt like a lifeline – until Elyounoussi turned predator. The Norwegian international latched onto a loose ball in the box, firing low past Bernardo Fontes to spark bedlam in the Danish stands. Copenhagen had weathered early pressure, their 36% possession belying attacking intent – 8 of their 9 shots came from inside Braga’s box, a sign of surgical precision.

Braga’s VAR heartbreak compounds misery

Just as Ricardo Horta thought he’d equalized in the 63rd minute, Copenhagen’s defenders turned celebrators – the offside flag sparing them. Braga’s frustration grew as Jean-Baptiste Gorby skied their only shot on target, their expected goals of 0.55 telling the story of blunt attack. By contrast, Copenhagen’s 1.56 xG proved their chances weren’t just hopeful punts.

Cornelius the executioner seals it

When Cornelius rose to meet Birger Meling’s 79th-minute cross, the stadium knew. His thumping header made it 2-0 before he applied the coup de grâce six minutes later, tapping home Thapelo Maseko’s unselfish square ball. Two goals in six minutes turned a battling win into a statement – Copenhagen’s 6 shots on target to Braga’s 1 shouting their dominance.

What this means for both sides

For Copenhagen, this 3-0 statement launches their Conference League campaign with wings – Cornelius’ brace announcing their attacking threat. Braga must regroup fast; their sterile possession and solitary shot on target betraying creative failings. The Portuguese side’s Europa Conference League journey starts with grim questions after being outmuscled in Copenhagen’s cauldron.
