Scamacca Seals Dominant Atalanta Win Over Pafos in Europa Conference League

Atalanta began their UEFA Europa Conference League campaign in emphatic style, crushing Pafos 3-1 in the League Stage – 1 at the Gewiss Stadium. The Italian side wasted no time asserting their dominance, roaring out of the blocks with the kind of attacking verve that left their Cypriot opponents chasing shadows.

Atalanta’s Flying Start

The Nerazzurri struck inside the first minute, Eljif Elmas finishing coolly after Gianluca Raspadori’s incisive pass sliced open the Pafos defence. It was a statement of intent from Gian Piero Gasperini’s men, who were 2-0 up by the 18th minute when Raspadori converted a penalty with ruthless efficiency.

Atalanta’s relentless pressure saw them rack up eight shots in the opening 20 minutes alone, their fluid movement and crisp passing leaving Pafos struggling to gain a foothold. The visitors’ misery deepened just before half-time when Gianluca Scamacca powered home Charles De Ketelaere’s cross to make it 3-0, Atalanta’s dominance reflected in their 73% possession and 12 shots in a thoroughly one-sided first half.

Pafos’ Lone Resistance

Pafos manager Rui Vitória made three changes at the break in a desperate attempt to stem the tide, but Atalanta continued to control proceedings, finishing with 65% possession and 20 attempts on goal. The Cypriots did pull one back late on when Biel volleyed home Anderson Silva’s cross, but it was mere consolation on a night when they were comprehensively outclassed.

What This Means For The Europa Conference League

This result sends a resounding message to the rest of the Europa Conference League – Atalanta mean business. For Pafos, a harsh reality check about the gulf in class at this level. Gasperini’s side now sit top of their group after Round 1, their attacking firepower making them genuine contenders. Pafos must regroup quickly if they are to stand any chance of progressing in Europe’s third-tier competition.
