Atletico Tucuman and Independiente Rivadavia played out a tense 0-0 draw in their Liga Profesional Argentina Clausura opener, with defences on top in Santa Fe.

A Tactical Battle from the Off

Independiente Rivadavia came flying out of the traps, eager to impose their possession-heavy style on the game. Alfredo Berti’s men dominated the ball early, completing 79% of their passes as they probed Atletico’s compact 4-2-3-1 shape. The hosts, under Julio Falcioni, looked content to absorb pressure and hit on the break.

Independiente Rivadavia’s Missed Opportunities

Despite their control, Independiente struggled to turn possession into clear chances. Their best first-half opening fell to Fabrizio Sartori, who fired straight at Luis Ingolotti from close range. The visitors ended the half with 60% possession and 6 shots, but just 1 on target – a theme that would haunt them.

Atletico Tucuman Dig Deep

Atletico grew into the game after the break, with Leandro Díaz’s industry causing problems for Independiente’s backline. The hosts had their best chance on 65 minutes through Nicolás Laméndola, whose curling effort forced a smart save from Nicolás Bolcato. Despite their limited possession (40%), Atletico matched Independiente’s 3 shots on target.

Frustration Mounts for Independiente

As the game wore on, Independiente’s frustration became evident. Iván Villalba and Alex Arce both saw yellow for needless fouls, disrupting their rhythm. Berti threw on fresh attackers in the closing stages, but Atletico’s defence stood firm, marshalled superbly by Clever Ferreira and Maximiliano Villa.

In the dying moments, Leonel Vega picked up a late yellow for timewasting as Atletico saw out a hard-earned point. Independiente will rue their missed chances, having generated 0.89 xG compared to Atletico’s 0.26. But Falcioni’s side showed grit and organisation to frustrate one of the league’s most dangerous attacks.

What This Result Means

For Independiente Rivadavia, this stalemate is a missed opportunity to make an early statement in the Clausura. Despite controlling long periods, their inability to convert dominance into goals will be a concern for Berti. Atletico Tucuman, meanwhile, can take positives from a clean sheet against one of Argentina’s form teams. Falcioni’s pragmatic approach paid dividends here, setting a solid foundation for their campaign.

Both sides will look to sharpen their attacking edge in Gameweek 2, with Independiente hosting Huracán and Atletico traveling to Rosario Central.
