Whitecaps Silence Montreal in Final-Day 0-2 Victory

Vancouver Whitecaps shattered CF Montreal’s playoff dreams with a ruthless 0-2 victory on the final day of the MLS regular season. In a tense, end-to-end affair at the Stade Saputo, the Whitecaps showed their class when it mattered most, with Cheikh Sabaly and M. Gherasimencov striking to seal the points.

CF Montreal’s Nervous Start

Montreal, needing a win to keep their playoff hopes alive, started cautiously against a Vancouver side already assured of their postseason place. The home side struggled to find rhythm, their 36% possession a stark contrast to the Whitecaps’ slick, 64% dominance. Victor Loturi’s yellow card on the stroke of halftime summed up Montreal’s frustration as Vancouver’s midfield trio of Ralph Priso, Çağlar Cvetkoviç, and Oliver Larraz dictated play.

Vancouver Whitecaps’ Clinical Edge

Cheikh Sabaly broke the deadlock in the 50th minute, capitalizing on Montreal’s defensive lapse to slot home. The Whitecaps doubled their lead in the 83rd minute through M. Gherasimencov, who latched onto Bruno Caicedo’s assist to put the game beyond doubt. Vancouver’s eight shots on target compared to Montreal’s three told the story of their attacking efficiency.

Montreal’s Late Desperation

Phillippe Eullaffroy threw on attackers Alexis Sanchez, Daniel Rios, and Brayan Ceballos in a desperate bid to salvage the game, but Vancouver’s defense held firm. Luca Petrasso’s yellow card in the 74th minute epitomized Montreal’s growing anxiety as their playoff ambitions slipped away.

What This Result Means

For Vancouver Whitecaps, this win consolidates their playoff position heading into the postseason. Their sixth clean sheet of the season, combined with their clinical finishing, will give them confidence. For CF Montreal, the defeat ends their playoff dream on the final day, leaving them to rue missed opportunities. The season’s end marks a period of reflection and rebuilding.
