Surridge Double Sinks Cincinnati as Nashville Wins 2-0

FC Cincinnati 0-2 Nashville SC: MLS Regular Season – Matchday 34

The final whistle at TQL Stadium wasn’t just the end of a game — it was the sound of FC Cincinnati’s playoff hopes evaporating into the Ohio night as Sam Surridge’s deadly double gave Nashville SC a crushing 2-0 away victory in MLS Week 34.

Nashville’s Surgical Strike in Cincinnati Chaos

Cincinnati’s defensive discipline disintegrated under pressure, racking up five yellow cards before halftime alone. Obinna Nwobodo, Evander, and Samuel Gidi all saw yellow in a frantic opening 45 minutes that saw Pat Noonan sacrifice centre-back Teenage Hadebe for Miles Robinson at the break. But the tactical bandaids couldn’t stop the bleeding.

Nashville’s breakthrough came on 61 minutes when Andy Najar dissected Cincinnati’s backline with a diagonal ball that found Surridge charging into the box. The English striker made no mistake, slotting past Roman Celentano to stun the home crowd into silence.

Surridge Seals It With Nashville Counter Punch

Cincy’s response was frantic but futile – Kyle Smith joining the book with a 65th minute yellow as Nashville’s midfield trio of Yazbek, Corcoran and Mukhtar kept control with 51% possession. The killer blow came on 86 minutes when Patrick Yazbek released Surridge again, the striker clinically doubling his tally to ice the game.

The stats told the story of Cincinnati’s frustration – 14 total shots but just 5 on target, with Nashville keeper Ben Schwake equal to everything. Their expected goals of 1.02 reflected a night of half-chances amid growing desperation.

What This Means for Both MLS Sides

For Cincinnati, this home defeat leaves their playoff hopes hanging by a thread with mounting personnel concerns – Pavel Bucha’s late yellow adding to their disciplinary meltdown after amassing 13 fouls and 5 bookings.

Nashville’s road warriors march on with a vital three points that keeps their postseason dreams very much alive. Sam Surridge now has 8 goals in his last 10 appearances, forming a deadly partnership with Hany Mukhtar that could yet propel them into the playoffs. Their clinical finishing (1.32 xG from just 5 shots on target) made the difference where Cincinnati couldn’t.

The final seconds saw both sides make late subs – including Mukhtar coming off to a standing ovation from traveling Nashville fans who know this result could define their season. Their next match against Charlotte FC now becomes a potential play-in eliminator, while Cincinnati must regroup quickly against the New York Red Bulls with time running out.
