Tarragona Double Seals 2-0 Win for Union Santa Fe Against 10-Man Velez

Union Santa Fe clinched a dominant 2-0 victory over Velez Sarsfield in the Liga Profesional Argentina Clausura, a game turned on its head by an early red card and Cristian Tarragona’s lethal finishing. The drama began in the 6th minute when VAR confirmed a penalty for Union Santa Fe after Marcelo Estigarribia was fouled. Four minutes later, Velez Sarsfield’s Thiago Silvero was sent off, leaving his team with a mountain to climb.

Tarragona stepped up and coolly converted the penalty in the 12th minute, sending the home fans into raptures. Union Santa Fe doubled their lead in the 28th minute when Tarragona struck again, this time from open play, assisted by Estigarribia. Velez Sarsfield’s night went from bad to worse as they struggled to create chances, managing just one shot on target throughout the match.

Union Santa Fe’s Control

Union Santa Fe’s control was evident, finishing with 15 total shots, 11 of which came from inside the box. Despite having only 42% possession, they made their chances count, with Tarragona’s clinical finishing proving decisive. Their defense was equally impressive, limiting Velez Sarsfield to just two shots inside the box.

Velez Sarsfield’s Struggle

Velez Sarsfield, despite their 58% ball possession, were unable to capitalize, with Rodrigo Aliendro’s potential red card cancellation in the 67th minute offering little solace. Their lone shot on target came from Matias Pellegrini, but it was not enough to trouble Union Santa Fe’s goalkeeper, Martin Mansilla.

What This Means

This victory propels Union Santa Fe up the Clausura standings, injecting momentum into their campaign. For Velez Sarsfield, the early red card and subsequent defeat is a bitter pill to swallow, highlighting the need for discipline in their upcoming fixtures.

Both teams will now look ahead to their next matches, with Union Santa Fe aiming to build on this win and Velez Sarsfield seeking redemption in their quest for a turnaround in fortunes.
