Manchester City Strike First in Champions League Battle

Manchester City launched their Champions League campaign with ruthless efficiency, overcoming Porto 2-0 at the Estádio do Dragão through two deadly Erling Haaland strikes. The holders showed all their big-game pedigree with a performance that balanced first-half frustration with second-half domination.

Porto’s Defiant First Half

The home side came snarling out of the traps, snapping at City’s heels in a first 45 minutes that yielded just one shot on target for either side. Francesco Farioli’s well-drilled Porto defended manfully, snapping into tackles and drawing three first-half bookings from City – Josko Gvardiol, Donnarumma and eventually Haaland himself. But the Norwegian marksman would have the last laugh.

Haaland’s Double Delivers for Manchester City

Just two minutes into the second half, Enzo Fernández wriggled free down the left and clipped a perfect cross for Haaland to thump home off the underside of the bar. Porto’s resistance seemed broken, but by the 86th minute they were still in it – until Rayan Aït-Nouri’s slide-rule pass sent Haaland clear to round Diogo Costa and seal it in stoppage time. City’s 64% possession yielded 20 shots and 10 on target to Porto’s meagre 0, underlining their control.

What This Means for Both Sides

For Porto, it’s a harsh lesson in taking rare chances against elite opposition, their Champions League campaign starting with a whimper despite a battling defensive display. For City, it’s another statement in a competition they’ve grown to dominate – their 12th consecutive European away game unbeaten. With Haaland now scoring 19 in his last 19 UCL appearances, Pep Guardiola’s successor Enzo Maresca couldn’t have dreamed of a better start.
