Corinthians 1-2 Chapecoense: A Night of Shattered Dreams in Serie A
The Arena Corinthians fell silent except for the delirious chants of 300 traveling fans as Chapecoense completed a stunning 2-1 comeback victory in Serie A’s 26th round – their first league win at this stadium since the tragic plane crash of 2016.
Corinthians’ Lightning Start Turns to Agony
The hosts exploded from the blocks like a team possessed. Before the clock hit 02:30, Matheus Bidu had already volleyed them ahead from Gustavo Henrique’s inch-perfect cross, sending 45,000 Timão faithful into raptures. With 62% possession and 16 total shots, Corinthians played with the swagger of champions – until Marcio Antonio struck his first dagger in the 40th minute.
Chapecoense’s Resilience Rewarded
Despite spending large periods pinned back, Chapecoense showed the resilience that once made them Brazil’s darlings. Marcio Antonio’s clinical finish from Heitor’s through ball ignited belief before halftime was soured by Breno Bidon’s VAR-disallowed goal for Corinthians. The visitors emerged transformed, with veteran Yannick Bolasie’s 61st-minute introduction changing the game. His mazy run and perfect cutback teed up Marcio Antonio’s 77th-minute winner – the striker’s sixth goal in five games leaving Corinthians’ defense in tatters.
What This Means for Both Teams
For Chapecoense, this wasn’t just three points – it was catharsis in the city where their tragedy unfolded. Coach Rafael Lacerda’s tactical masterclass, including four second-half yellow cards and five smart substitutions, earned a victory that lifts them away from relegation fears. Corinthians’ title dreams now hang by a thread after consecutive defeats. Fernando Diniz’s men dominated every stat except the one that mattered – their 13 shots inside the box yielding just one goal. As the hosts prepare for continental commitments, this defeat may haunt their season.
