Monza Demolish Cagliari 4-0 in Serie A Masterclass

Monza delivered a devastating 4-0 thrashing of Cagliari in Serie A’s seventh round, a statement victory that sent shockwaves through the league. The home side turned their U-Power Stadium into a fortress, with Gustavo Varela orchestrating the demolition with two goals and an assist in a performance that shimmered with intent.

Monza Break the Deadlock Before Half-Time

The tension snapped in the 39th minute when Eddy Kouadio, fed by Dany Mota’s incisive pass, arrowed a finish past a despairing Elia Caprile. It was a goal that punished Cagliari’s toothless start — their 55% possession translating to just one shot on target in the opening 40 minutes. Monza smelt blood.

Varela Double Sparks Second-Half Rout

Two minutes after the break, Varela doubled the lead with a ruthless finish from Foe Ondoa’s delivery. Then came the hammer blow — Jay Robinson volleying home Varela’s cross in the 66th minute to make it 3-0, the stadium erupting as Cagliari’s defence disintegrated. Varela wasn’t done, drilling home his second in the 79th minute to cap a night where his 2.1 expected goals output told the story of a striker in lethal form.

Cagliari’s Collapse Leaves Pisacane Searching for Answers

Cagliari’s misery was compounded by yellow cards for Harry Winks and Alieu Fadera as their discipline frayed. Despite Mustapha Fadera’s introduction at half-time, their 16 shots yielded just five on target — a damning indictment of their wastefulness. Monza’s goalkeeper Niklas Törnqvist stood tall with five saves, including a stunning double stop in the 68th minute that preserved the clean sheet.

For Monza, this was a night to dream — moving them within touching distance of the European places with their biggest Serie A win since promotion. As for Cagliari, manager Fabio Pisacane faces a crisis after a defeat that leaves them precariously close to the drop zone, their defence conceding four goals from just six shots on target. The international break comes at the perfect time for regrouping, but the scars of this humiliation will linger.
