Sporting CP 1-2 Académico Viseu: Primeira Liga Matchday 9
João Guilherme scored twice as Académico Viseu pulled off a stunning 2-1 away victory over Sporting CP in Primeira Liga’s Matchday 9, leaving the Lions’ title hopes in tatters.
Académico Viseu’s Lightning Start
Viseu’s intentions were clear from the whistle – Luis Silva and Cihan Kahraman both saw yellow inside 11 minutes as they snapped into tackles. Their aggression paid dividends in the 24th minute when João Guilherme latched onto Robinho’s pass, slotting past Kaique to silence the Alvalade.
Sporting CP’s Frustration Builds
The hosts huffed and puffed with 71% possession but their xG of 2.06 told a story of wastefulness. A penalty awarded to Maximiliano Araújo was overturned by VAR in first-half stoppage time, compounding their misery. Issa Doumbia’s yellow card for a reckless challenge epitomised their growing desperation.
Luis Suárez Brings False Hope
The introduction of Geny Catamo and Fotis Ioannidis at half-time sparked life into Sporting. Iván Fresneda’s overlapping run created the equaliser in the 62nd minute, his cutback converted clinically by veteran Luis Suárez. The roof nearly came off when Irankunda forced a spectacular save moments later.
João Guilherme’s Hammer Blow
Just when Sporting thought they’d turned the tide, Guilherme struck again in the 74th minute. Soufiane Messeguem’s defence-splitting pass found the striker, who buried his second past a stranded Kaique. Araújo’s late yellow card summed up a disastrous night where Sporting’s 28 shots yielded just one goal.
For Viseu, this wasn’t smash-and-grab – their disciplined low block (only 29% possession) and clinical finishing (3 shots on target, 2 goals) earned a famous victory. Sporting’s title aspirations look fragile, while Bruno Pinheiro’s men climb away from danger with Primeira Liga’s upset of the season.
