Academico Viseu 2-1 Rio Ave: Primeira Liga Matchday 10
Academico Viseu produced a stirring second-half comeback to defeat Rio Ave 2-1 in Primeira Liga Matchday 10, overturning Miguel Patrício’s first-half opener with goals from Soufiane Messeguem and André Clóvis in a frantic eight-minute spell at Estádio do Fontelo.
Rio Ave Strike First Through Patrício
The visitors looked composed early, their 55% possession translating into a 38th-minute breakthrough when João Tomé’s incisive pass found Patrício, who rifled home his second goal of the season. Rio Ave’s control was reflected in their first-half xG of 0.81 compared to Viseu’s 0.29, with keeper Ewerton making two crucial saves to keep the deficit at one.
Substitutions Spark Viseu’s Fire
Three changes in the 64th minute – Mestanza, Gambor and Gohi entering – injected urgency into Viseu. Five minutes later, Messeguem atoned for his earlier yellow card by lashing in Clóvis’ cutback, the Moroccan’s third goal of the campaign sending the home fans into raptures. The momentum shift was seismic – Viseu recorded 8 second-half shots to Rio Ave’s 4.
Clóvis Completes Primeira Liga Comeback
The hosts smelled blood. In the 77th minute, substitute Alejandro Mestanza turned provider, his clever pass met by Clóvis’ clinical first-time finish. Rio Ave’s discipline crumbled as Liavas saw yellow and Andreas Ntoi was dismissed in stoppage time, their frustration compounded by conceding twice from Viseu’s only two shots on target in the second half.
What This Means for Both Sides
For Bruno Pinheiro’s Academico Viseu, this comeback could prove season-defining – moving them clear of relegation fears with their third win of the campaign. Rio Ave’s Vasco Seabra faces questions after surrendering control, their fifth loss leaving them hovering uncomfortably above the drop zone. When these sides meet again in April, survival may well be on the line.
