Sweden kicked off their UEFA Nations League League B campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Romania in Stockholm, as Viktor Gyökeres’ first-half stunner proved decisive. The hosts dominated possession and created the better chances, but needed all their resolve to see off a spirited Romanian side.
Isak’s Early Opener For Sweden
Alexander Isak got Sweden off to a dream start in the 20th minute, coolly slotting home after being played through by Yasin Ayari. The Real Sociedad striker’s clinical finish sent the home fans into raptures.
But Romania hit back just nine minutes later when Dennis Man latched onto Andrei Raşiu’s through ball and fired past Viktor Johansson. The visitors were in the ascendancy, with Răzvan Marin seeing yellow for a cynical foul in the 37th minute.
Gyökeres’ Moment Of Magic
Sweden regained the lead in dramatic fashion six minutes before the break. Gyökeres picked up the ball 25 yards out, turned on a sixpence and unleashed an unstoppable drive into the top corner. The Sporting CP forward’s moment of individual brilliance put the hosts back in front.
Romania’s frustration showed as Virgil Ghiță was booked in first-half stoppage time, and Tudor Băluță was sacrificed for Vladimir Screciu at the interval.
Sweden See Out Nervy Second Half
The second half was a tense affair, with Sweden seeing a goal ruled out by VAR in the 53rd minute. Graham Potter made a double change on 63 minutes, bringing on Hjalmar Ekdal and Daniel Svensson.
Romania threw on Ianis Hagi and Louis Munteanu in search of an equaliser, but Sweden’s defense stood firm. The visitors ended the game with five yellow cards, as Vladimir Screciu and Dennis Man were cautioned in quick succession.
Sweden comfortably saw out six minutes of added time to claim all three points and take an early lead in Group B3. For Romania, it was a frustrating return to Nations League action after their promotion from League C.
The victory marks a positive start to Potter’s tenure as Sweden manager, with Gyökeres’ wonder goal highlighting his side’s attacking threat. Romania will look to bounce back against Ukraine on Tuesday, while Sweden face Greece in their next outing.
