Atlanta United vs Toronto FC: MLS Regular Season Showdown
Miguel Almirón delivered a masterclass as Atlanta United dismantled Toronto FC 3-1 in MLS Regular Season Week 33, turning Mercedes-Benz Stadium into a cauldron of noise.
The Paraguayan wizard needed just 22 minutes to break the deadlock, sweeping home Aleksey Miranchuk’s threaded pass to ignite the home crowd. Toronto’s defense looked rattled, and Dániel Sallói’s yellow card for a reckless challenge only fueled Atlanta’s momentum.
Cooper Sanchez Strikes as Atlanta Turn the Screws
Cooper Sanchez doubled the lead before halftime, pouncing on a loose ball after Almirón’s initial shot was parried. The academy graduate’s raucous celebration said it all – Atlanta were rampant.
Miranchuk made it 3-0 just six minutes after the restart, curling a beauty into the top corner without needing an assist. With 16 shots inside the box and 4.29 xG, Atlanta’s attacking onslaught left Toronto goalkeeper Luka Gavran picking the ball out of his net three times in 51 minutes.
Toronto’s Failed Fightback as Lewis Morgan Grabs Consolation
To their credit, Toronto made five substitutions and pulled one back through Lewis Morgan’s 79th-minute strike. But Alonso’s late yellow card typified their frustration in a match where they managed just 1.35 xG despite 52% possession.
The final whistle sparked jubilant scenes in Atlanta as Tata Martino’s men cemented their playoff credentials. For Toronto, it’s back to the drawing board – their leaky defense conceding three times despite blocking four shots. These teams might just meet again when the stakes are even higher.
