Velez Hold San Lorenzo 2-2 in Clausura Classic After Frantic Finale

Velez Sarsfield 2-2 San Lorenzo. Clausura Round 15. The final whistle cut through the October night like a blade—not the ending either side craved, but perhaps the one they deserved.

For an hour, this felt like Velez’s night. Guillermo Barros Schelotto’s side arrived with intent, their 65% possession suffocating San Lorenzo’s 35% from the opening moments. The visitors came to survive, not thrive, and for a quarter of an hour they managed it. Then Juan Cruz Policella broke through.

Velez Sarsfield Start Like Champions

The 22nd minute belonged to Velez. Policella, already on a yellow card from the second minute for his own aggression, became the architect of their assault when Matías Pellegrini slipped him clear. Velez 1-0. The Clausura leaders were moving with a rhythm that San Lorenzo simply could not match.

Three minutes later—the 25th—Pellegrini himself finished. No assist recorded, just a striker’s instinct and clinical execution. Velez 2-0. At this point, with 460 total passes already strung together across the pitch and 16 shots taken to San Lorenzo’s mere four, Barros Schelotto’s men looked unstoppable. The expected goals told the tale: Velez 1.09, San Lorenzo 0.86. This was supposed to be a coronation.

But San Lorenzo arrived at the Clausura with knife-fighters in their pocket. R. Insúa’s 3-4-1-2 was built to absorb and strike. They soaked up pressure like a sponge and waited for the moment when Velez’s intensity would crack.

San Lorenzo Refuse to Bend and Snap

The moment came at the worst possible time for Velez—45+1 minutes. Alexis Cuello, arriving on Rodrigo Auzmendi’s assist, pulled one back. Just before the interval. Just when Velez thought they were walking into the tunnel in command. San Lorenzo 1-2.

The momentum shift was palpable. Velez had 11 shots inside the box by this point; San Lorenzo had managed six. But in football, efficiency matters more than volume. Lanzini thought he’d added a third for Velez in the 55th minute, but VAR cancelled it. The decision stung. Velez had 13 fouls committed by then; San Lorenzo 16. The yellow cards were flying—Pellegrini, Auzmendi, Devecchi, Amor all cautioned in the opening hour. This was turning into a street fight.

By the 70th minute, Emiliano Amor joined the yellow-card collection. San Lorenzo were hanging on by their fingernails, but they were hanging on. Velez’s goalkeeper made no saves all night—they didn’t need him. San Lorenzo’s kept three out. That was the difference between dominance and desperation.

Auzmendi’s 81st-Minute Leveller Shocks Velez

Then Rodrigo Auzmendi arrived at the 81st minute and buried it. Velez 2-2. San Lorenzo erupted. Not because they were winning—they weren’t. But because they had refused to die. The away side, camped in their own half for 80 minutes, had somehow clawed back parity.

Velez threw everyone forward. Three substitutions came in the 84th and 89th minutes—Policella off, Pellegrini off, Lanzini off. Fresh legs. Fresh desperation. But San Lorenzo’s goalkeeper made his third crucial save. The visitors had absorbed 16 Velez shots; only five found the target. Seven missed, five were blocked. San Lorenzo took six shots total. Two on target. Two goals.

Eight yellow cards flew in total—three for Velez, six for San Lorenzo. The discipline collapsed as desperation set in. By the 90+2 mark, when Danilo Arboleda picked up the sixth yellow for the visitors, both sides knew it was done.

Clausura Race Stays Competitive

The final whistle sounded on a Velez Sarsfield side that dominated but couldn’t finish. San Lorenzo escaped with a draw they’ll treasure and a point they absolutely earned through resilience. In the Clausura Round 15 landscape, this changes little for either side. But it changes everything about how they’ll approach what comes next.

Velez had 460 passes to San Lorenzo’s 250. They had 16 shots to San Lorenzo’s six. They had 8 corner kicks to San Lorenzo’s one. And yet here they stand level. That’s not a failure of execution so much as a masterclass in San Lorenzo’s refusal to surrender—and a reminder that in October football, possession means nothing if the ball won’t go in.
