Own Goals Crush Venezia as Inter Steal 2-0 Win

Venezia 0-2 Inter: Serie A Frustration Turns to Farce

Venezia’s defiant resistance collapsed in cruel fashion as two own goals in three second-half minutes handed Inter a flattering 2-0 Serie A victory at the Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo.

Venezia Battle But Lady Luck Turns Her Back

The home side had outperformed their lofty opponents for 78 minutes, Lion Lauberbach’s disallowed strike on 29 minutes summing up their cursed evening. Their 12 shots dwarfed Inter’s output until the dam burst in bizarre fashion – Matias Moreno’s sliced clearance looping over his own keeper on 79 minutes before Redouane Halhal’s nightmare deflection sealed it moments later.

Davide Nicola’s men carved the better chances throughout, their 5 shots inside the box and 3.14 xG underlining their attacking intent. Thorir Johann Helgason fizzed a 20-yarder just wide before the break as Venezia’s pressing game rattled Inter’s reshuffled midfield.

Inter Grind It Out Without Spark

Cristian Chivu’s side looked leggy after midweek European exertions, Bastoni’s early yellow card setting the tone for a disjointed display. Their 66% possession bore no cutting edge until Venezia’s defensive meltdown, with star man Marcus Thuram kept on ice until the 86th minute.

The introduction of young guns Stankovic and Sucic at half-time failed to ignite Inter’s attack, their 2 shots on target both coming via Venezia defenders. Yet three points is three points, moving the Nerazzurri back into title contention after an uncharacteristically blunt display.

What This Means For Both Sides

For Venezia, this brutally harsh scoreline masks another step forward in their Serie A transition. Lacking only ruthlessness, Nicola’s men outworked and outthought their illustrious visitors for long periods. Their 9th-place standing remains a fair reflection.

Inter march on unconvincingly. Chivu will demand more from misfiring forwards ahead of the Derby d’Italia, but resilience when not at their best could prove vital in the title race. Two own goals papered over the cracks – but title hopefuls care little for aesthetics.
