Fluminense Stun Internacional 2-1 With 97th-Minute Heartbreaker

Fluminense vs Internacional – A Classic Serie A Comeback

Fluminense snatched victory from the jaws of a derby defeat, scoring twice in the final 12 minutes – including Luciano Acosta’s 97th-minute heartbreaker – to stun Internacional 2-1 in a pulsating Serie A clash. The Rio giants showed why they’re title contenders with a display of pure conviction against their shell-shocked rivals.

Internacional’s First-Half Frustration

For 45 minutes, Internacional’s defensive block absorbed Fluminense’s 76% possession like a sponge. The visitors seemed content to frustrate, packing bodies behind the ball while Alan Patrick lurked for counters. Their patience paid dividends seconds after halftime – Matheus Bahia’s raking pass found Patrick, who coolly slotted past Fábio. The goal against the run of play sent the away fans into raptures.

Fluminense’s Relentless Pressure

Marcão’s men responded like champions. Hércules Pereira do Nascimento’s towering 78th-minute header from a Ganso cross finally broke Internacional’s resistance, the ball cannoning off the crossbar before crossing the line. The Maracanã erupted as Fluminense’s 16 total shots finally bore fruit. Internacional cracked under pressure – two yellows in six minutes exposing their fraying discipline.

Then, pandemonium. Deep into stoppage time, substitute Luciano Acosta pounced on a loose ball after Internacional failed to clear, drilling low past Kauan. The stadium shook. Internacional players collapsed. The script was ripped up in an instant.

What This Result Means

For Fluminense, this was a statement win that keeps their title charge alive. Their 696 completed passes at 91% accuracy showcase their control, even when trailing. Internacional will rue surrendering a lead while mustering just 24% possession. Eduardo Baptista’s men defended bravely but ultimately crumbled when it mattered most.

The Serie A table now looks very different. Fluminense’s never-say-die spirit could define their season, while Internacional must regroup quickly from this psychological blow. One thing’s certain – nobody leaving the Maracanã will forget those euphoric final minutes anytime soon.
