Benfica Crush Celtic 4-1 in Europa League Masterclass

Benfica’s Early Onslaught Shatters Celtic

Benfica demolished Celtic 4-1 in their UEFA Europa League group stage clash at Estadio da Luz, a brutal five-minute spell deciding the contest before half-time had even beckoned. The Portuguese giants struck first through Jhon Durán’s textbook penalty after just five minutes, the Colombian coolly converting after Gianluca Prestianni was fouled.

The hosts doubled their lead in the 23rd minute when Alexander Bah latched onto Prestianni’s through ball, the right-back’s devilish finish leaving Vinicius Sinisalo stranded. Celtic’s defence crumbled again before the break, Durán grabbing his second with a clinical first-time strike from another Prestianni assist – the Argentine winger conducting proceedings like a maestro.

Celtic’s Ritual Second-Half Response

The Scottish side made four substitutions at half-time, throwing on Haissem Hassan and Callum Osmand in desperate search of momentum. They found brief respite when substitute Camilo Durán tapped home Hassan’s cross in the 63rd minute, but any hope of a comeback was extinguished six minutes from time. Vangelis Pavlidis came off the bench to rifle home Tomás Araújo’s knockdown, sealing Celtic’s fate with Benfica’s fourth.

Marco Silva’s men dominated the statistics (26 shots to Celtic’s 14, 53% possession, 3.22 xG), their front three of Durán, Prestianni and Lukebakio wreaking havoc throughout. The Scottish champions looked shell-shocked, their midfield overrun and defence repeatedly carved open by Benfica’s intricate movement.

What This Means for Both Sides

For Benfica, this statement victory keeps them perfect in the Europa League group stage while announcing their credentials as potential winners. Durán’s predatory instincts and Prestianni’s creativity could terrify any defence in this competition.

Celtic’s defensive frailties – especially against rapid transitions – must be addressed urgently if they’re to progress. Michael O’Neill made five substitutions trying to spark life into his side, but the stark reality is they were outclassed by superior technical quality in every department.
