GIL Vicente Stun Braga 2-1 with Late Own Goal Drama

Braga 1-2 GIL Vicente: Primeira Liga Second Round Heartbreak

SC Braga suffered a gut-wrenching 2-1 home defeat to GIL Vicente in the Primeira Liga’s second round, undone by Diogo Travassos’ 72nd-minute own goal that turned the Estadio Municipal into a morgue after Pau Victor’s opener had promised so much.

Braga’s Early Dominance Rewarded

The Arsenalistas came flying out the traps, their 60% possession and 18 shots telling the story of a side determined to atone for last week’s disappointment. When Pau Victor pounced in the 33rd minute, VAR confirming his strike after a brief check, Braga’s pressure had its reward. The stands shook – this was more like it.

GIL Vicente’s Ruthless Response

But football loves a spoiler. Fresh from halftime, Walace França announced himself with a 49th-minute equaliser against the run of play, Murilo Souza’s vision slicing Braga open. Suddenly, Carlos Vicens’ men looked brittle – Jean-Baptiste Gorby’s early yellow now looked symptomatic of a side playing with fraying nerves.

The Cruel Twist

Then came the sucker punch. A hopeful GIL Vicente cross in the 72nd minute, Travassos’ desperate clearance, and the net bulging behind a frozen Bernardo Fontes. Braga’s 1.39 xG mocked them; their 11 shots inside the box suddenly meaningless as GIL Vicente’s streetwise defending (9 fouls, 3 vital blocks) snapped their resolve.

What This Means

For Braga, early season warning signs flash red after two underwhelming displays. For Luis Pinto’s GIL Vicente? A statement win built on grit, taking their chances (1.54 xG from just 10 shots) and a slice of fortune when it mattered most. The Primeira Liga’s underdogs are off and running – the giants have been put on notice.
