River Plate Denied Dramatic Win in 1-1 Sarmiento Stalemate

River Plate Held by Gritty Sarmiento in Tense Clausura Battle

Sarmiento Junin defied 73% River Plate possession to claw out a 1-1 draw that felt like victory, Julián Contrera’s early strike cancelled out by Gonzalo Montiel as the Liga Profesional Argentina Clausura produced another pulsating chapter.

Sarmiento Junin Shock the Monumental With Lightning Start

The hosts exploded from the traps like men possessed, Contrera pouncing on Junior Marabel’s 15th-minute delivery to stun the Monumental. River’s backline froze, their xG superiority rendered meaningless by one ruthless counter. The underdogs’ 27% possession stats masked a tactical masterclass — every clearance was a dagger, every block a roar.

VAR Drama and River Plate’s Relentless Response

When Fausto Vera thought he’d levelled before the hour, the VAR screen became Sarmiento’s saviour. But River’s tidal wave finally broke through in the 71st minute — Montiel arriving late to meet Thiago Almada’s exquisite cross, the full-back’s finish sparking pandemonium in the away end. Marcos Acuña’s introduction moments earlier had tilted the field; now the giants scented blood.

Sarmiento’s Yellow-Wall Resistance

Three bookings in 20 frenetic minutes told the story — Pablo Magnín’s desperate lunge, Contrera’s tactical foul, Manuel García’s last-ditch intervention. Each yellow card was a medal. Each clearance was a bullet dodged. By full-time, Sarmiento’s goalkeeper had made seven saves to River’s three, their 20 fouls a testament to the art of organised chaos.

What This Result Means for Both Sides

For River Plate, two dropped points in a title rat-race where perfection is demanded. For Sarmiento, this 1-1 draw echoes like a victory — proof that heart can stifle even the mightiest artillery. The Clausura’s relentless rhythm offers no respite: River must regroup fast, while Sarmiento carry this defiant performance as a shield into battles ahead.
