Neymar’s Penalty Drama Denies Flamengo 2-1 in Santos Stunner

A breathless, card-strewn Serie A clash finished Santos 2-2 Flamengo after Neymar’s ice-cold late penalty double cancelled out the visitors’ first-half dominance in a match that saw Flamengo finish with 10 men.

Flamengo’s First-Half Flair

The Rio giants announced their intentions early in São Paulo, Danilo Luiz da Silva rising to meet Pedro’s exquisite cross for 0-1 on 43 minutes. Just as Santos fans feared total collapse, Lucas Paquetá doubled Flamengo’s lead in first-half stoppage time after Jorge Carrascal’s incisive through ball split the defence. At the interval, Flamengo boasted 55% possession and six shots on target to Santos’ solitary effort.

Santos Fight Back With Neymar Magic

Cuca’s halftime double substitution — introducing Rony and Neymar for Álvaro Barreal and Philippe Coutinho — proved inspired. The game turned in the 79th minute when Jorginho saw red for a reckless challenge. With Flamengo down to 10, VAR awarded Santos two penalties in seven chaotic minutes. Neymar, the prodigal son, converted both with trademark nerve — first slotting home on 82 minutes, then burying his second on 88 minutes as Santos’ pressure told.

What This Means For Both Teams

Flamengo will rue their inability to hold on, their 12-match unbeaten streak in Serie A now broken after being 2-0 up. For Santos, this comeback could define their season — a point snatched from the jaws of defeat with Neymar directly involved in their last six league goals. The result leaves Santos four points adrift of the continental places while Flamengo’s title push takes a dent.
