San Lorenzo and Newell’s Old Boys Play Out Goalless Clausura Draw

The Estadio Pedro Bidegain bore witness to 90 minutes of frustration as San Lorenzo and Newell’s Old Boys battled to a 0-0 stalemate in Week 14 of Argentina’s Liga Profesional Clausura. In a match where defences dominated and chances were scarce, both sides left everything on the pitch but couldn’t find the decisive breakthrough.

San Lorenzo’s Missed Opportunities

The home side started brighter, with Gustavo Del Prete forcing Newell’s goalkeeper Jorge Reinatti into an early save. San Lorenzo’s best chance came in the 28th minute when Alexis Cuello rattled the crossbar from distance, the woodwork groaning under the impact. Sergio Sopratti’s men dominated possession early (48%) but struggled to turn their 13 shots into meaningful attempts on target.

Tensions flared just before half-time when Nicolas Tripichio saw yellow for a reckless challenge, one of 17 fouls committed by the hosts. Arboleda’s towering presence at the back kept Newell’s at bay, but San Lorenzo’s attacking substitutions – including Rodrigo Auzmendi’s introduction – failed to spark the needed creativity.

Newell’s Old Boys Frustrated in Attack

Fernando Kudelka’s side grew into the game after surviving San Lorenzo’s early pressure, with Lucas Carrizo and Walter Nunez both testing Federico Gattoni in the San Lorenzo goal. Their best opportunity fell to Matías Cóccaro in the 67th minute, but his header from Lucas Gomez’s cross sailed inches wide.

Newell’s discipline nearly cost them late on as Alejo Montero and Carrizo both entered the referee’s book amidst growing frustration. The visitors finished with higher expected goals (1.02 to 0.57) and marginally better possession (52%), but couldn’t capitalize on their 11 attempts. Youngster Facundo Gauch worked tirelessly down the left but found San Lorenzo’s back three a formidable obstacle.

What This Result Means For Both Sides

The point does little for either side’s Clausura ambitions. San Lorenzo remain mid-table, their lack of cutting edge proving costly over the past month. For Newell’s, this continues their unbeaten run but highlights their struggles against organized defences. Both managers will need to find solutions quickly with the Clausura entering its decisive phase.

As the Bidegain emptied, the shared frustration was palpable. These historic rivals cancelled each other out in a tactical battle that promised much but delivered little in terms of spectacle. The fight for continental qualification continues, but on this evidence, both sides have work to do.
