Diomande Fires Real Madrid to Gritty 1-0 Win Over Villarreal

Real Madrid Edge Past Villarreal in Tense La Liga Clash

Yan Diomande’s 62nd-minute strike proved decisive as Real Madrid ground out a 1-0 win against Villarreal in a fiercely contested La Liga encounter at the Santiago Bernabéu. Despite being reduced to 10 men after Vinícius’s late red card, José Mourinho’s side held firm to secure three vital points.

First Half: Cautions and Close Calls

The opening exchanges were marked by caution, with Villarreal’s Renato Veiga and Real’s Jude Bellingham both seeing yellow inside the first 20 minutes. Villarreal enjoyed the lion’s share of possession (54%) but struggled to test Thibaut Courtois, while Real Madrid carved out the best early chance – Kylian Mbappé’s effort forcing a smart save from Péter Gulácsi.

Second Half: Diomande Delivers for Real Madrid

The breakthrough came in the 62nd minute. Federico Valverde’s incisive pass found Diomande, who cut inside and unleashed a fierce shot that left Gulácsi no chance. VAR swiftly confirmed the goal, sending the Bernabéu into raptures. Villarreal responded by throwing on Ilias Akhomach and Sergi Cardona, but Real’s defence, marshaled by Antonio Rüdiger and Ibrahima Konaté, stood firm.

Late Drama: Vinícius Sees Red

The game’s complexion changed in the 72nd minute. Vinícius thought he’d doubled Real’s lead, only for VAR to rule it out. Worse followed for the Brazilian, who was shown a straight red card for his protestations. Despite being down to 10 men, Real Madrid held on, with Courtois making crucial saves from Alberto Moleiro and Ayoze Pérez in the dying minutes to preserve the clean sheet.

What This Means for Both Teams

This gritty win sees Real Madrid maintain their title challenge, proving they can grind out results even when not at their fluent best. For Villarreal, it’s a third consecutive league defeat that leaves manager Iñigo Pérez under mounting pressure. Both teams will look to bounce back swiftly, with Real Madrid hosting Atlético Madrid in the derby next, while Villarreal face a crucial clash against Sevilla.
