PEC Zwolle
Cambuur ripped the heart out of PEC Zwolle with a 90th-minute winner to steal a brutal 1-0 Eredivisie victory at MAC³PARK Stadium, leaving the home supporters stunned into silence.
The game had all the hallmarks of a dire mid-table stalemate — until the fourth official’s board flashed five added minutes. That’s when Cambuur, who’d mustered just two shots on target all afternoon, pounced. The away bench erupted as their scrappy set-piece delivery bobbled through a crowded box, eventually trickling over the line via a cruel deflection. Zwolle’s defenders collapsed to the turf; Cambuur’s substitutes sprinted halfway down the touchline in frenzied celebration.
PEC Zwolle’s Frustration Builds
For 89 minutes, Zwolle had huffed and puffed without blowing the house down. Their 62% possession produced just one genuine chance — a close-range header straight at the Cambuur keeper in the 71st minute. The home side’s buildup play was tidy but toothless, their crosses too often aimless. Cambuur’s low block absorbed pressure like a sponge, daring Zwolle to break them down — a challenge the hosts never rose to.
Cambuur’s Smash-and-Grab Masterclass
Cambuur set their stall out early — all ten outfield players routinely crowded their own penalty area when Zwolle advanced. Their gameplan was clear: suffer, survive, then strike. Only one of those boxes required ticking on Sunday. The visitors completed less than 200 passes all game (compared to Zwolle’s 500+) but made one of them count where it mattered.
Eredivisie Implications
This smash-and-grab leaves Zwolle just two points above the relegation playoff spots, their winless run stretching to four matches. For Cambuur, it’s back-to-back wins lifting them toward mid-table safety — and proof that sometimes the ugliest victories taste sweetest. Both sides face crucial fixtures next weekend, Zwolle traveling to Volendam while Cambuur host Fortuna Sittard in what could be another war of attrition.
