Minsk Stun Baku with 4-2 Comeback in Europa Thriller

UEFA Europa Conference League · 2nd Qualifying Round

Neftchi Baku 2 – 4 Dinamo Minsk

Dinamo Minsk produced a stunning second-half comeback to obliterate Neftchi Baku 4-2 in the UEFA Europa Conference League second qualifying round, turning the Azerbaijani side’s dream start into a nightmare within 45 chaotic minutes.

Neftchi Baku’s Lightning Start

The Bakuvians exploded from the blocks like a side possessed. Emin Mahmudov sent the home crowd into raptures after just two minutes, latching onto Gustavo Klismahn’s through ball before slotting past Ivan Shimakovich. Six minutes later, Aleksandr Selyava’s horror own goal doubled the lead – the Belarusian defender slicing a clearance into his own net under pressure from Lubomir Tupta.

For 35 minutes, Neftchi played like a side already through. Their 4-3-3 formation pressed high, with Minsk’s backline crumbling under the intensity. But football, cruel and beautiful, had other ideas.

Dinamo Minsk’s Resurgence

The turning point came in the 36th minute. Karen Vardanyan, Minsk’s Armenian livewire, pulled one back with a clinical finish after Yevgeniy Malashevich’s incisive pass split the defense. The goal changed everything. Fawaz Abdullahi’s yellow card just before halftime – a desperate lunge to stop a counter – showed Minsk’s growing frustration, but also their determination.

Whatever Aleksandr Shagoyko said at halftime worked instantly. Within 47 seconds of the restart, Malashevich turned scorer, finishing Vardanyan’s cross to level. The Bakuvian defense, so solid early, now leaked like a sieve. Vardanyan struck again in the 57th minute, capitalizing on Moustapha Djimet’s assist to complete the turnaround.

The Collapse

Neftchi’s substitutions reeked of panic – four changes in 14 minutes as Yuri Vernidub threw on fresh legs. But when Gleb Alykulov stepped up for a 76th-minute penalty after Falaye Sacko’s booking, even his initial miss couldn’t stop the bleeding. The rebound fell kindly, and Alykulov smashed home to complete the humiliation.

The statistics told the story of two halves: Neftchi’s early dominance giving way to Minsk’s 11 second-half shots. The Belarusians progress with momentum, while Baku must pick through the wreckage of a tie that slipped through their fingers in spectacular fashion.
