França’s Late Penalty Seals 1-0 Win for Gil Vicente Over Moreirense

França’s Late Heartbreak for Moreirense Seals Gil Vicente Victory

Walace França struck a last-gasp penalty in the 90th minute to give Gil Vicente a dramatic 1-0 victory over Moreirense in Primeira Liga matchday 8, breaking home hearts at Parque Joaquim de Almeida Freitas. The visitors’ late smash-and-grab raid came after a disciplined defensive display, with Moreirense failing to convert their superiority in chances despite a tense, combative contest.

Gil Vicente Weather Early Moreirense Pressure

The home side started brighter, with Manuel Mendonça firing a warning shot in the 7th minute after clever buildup play. But Gil Vicente’s organized defense held firm, frustrating Moreirense’s attacks. The first yellow card arrived in the 17th minute for Gil Vicente’s Ricardo Esgaio after a cynical foul, setting the tone for a bruising encounter. Despite Moreirense’s pressure, Gil Vicente carved out the best chance of the half, with Héctor Hernández denied by a last-ditch Maracás block in the 33rd minute.

Second Half Intensity Builds as Cards Fly

The second half exploded into life with challenges flying in from both sides. Gil Vicente’s Andreas Lausen saw yellow in the 56th minute for a reckless tackle, quickly followed by Manuel Mendonça for Moreirense in the 60th. Both managers turned to their benches in search of inspiration, with Gil Vicente introducing Mohamed Kaba and Moreirense bringing on Rodrigo Alonso and João Veloso.

As the game opened up, tempers flared with Gil Pinto Martins and Mohamed Kaba both cautioned in quick succession for Gil Vicente. Moreirense’s Gilberto Batista joined them in the book in the 75th minute after a clumsy aerial challenge. Despite the scrappiness, Moreirense looked the more likely to score, with Tiago Andrade forcing a smart save from Lucão in the 82nd minute.

França’s Late Drama Seals It for Gil Vicente

Just as it seemed Moreirense would claim at least a point, the game turned dramatically in the 89th minute. Héctor Hernández cleverly drew a clumsy foul in the box from Maracás, giving referee Miguel Lourenço no choice but to point to the spot. Substitute Walace França stepped up confidently, sending André Ferreira the wrong way to spark wild celebrations among the Gil Vicente contingent. Moreirense’s misery was compounded when Jóbson picked up a late yellow card for dissent, summing up their frustration.

What This Means for Both Sides

This smash-and-grab win lifts Gil Vicente into the top half of the Primeira Liga table, rewarding their resilience and clinical finishing when it mattered most. For Moreirense, it’s a bitter pill to swallow after dominating possession and creating more chances, leaving manager Vasco Costa with plenty to ponder as his side remain in the relegation zone. Both teams will need to regroup quickly, with crucial games against mid-table rivals coming up next week as the Primeira Liga season gathers pace.
