Analysis The numbers behind the result
Chicago clinical in limited possession to edge Portland
Chicago Fire's 2-1 win was justified by the xG tally (1.48 vs 0.99), despite being outpossessed 39%-61%. Robin Lod and Dje Tah D'Avilla struck early (9', 14') from Chicago's only two shots on target in the first half, capitalising on their sole period of attacking intent with two goals from an xG of just 0.78 combined. Portland's late surge saw Finn Surman convert from their lone clear chance (85'), but their 61% possession yielded only 0.99 xG from 10 shots - just two on target.
The decisive factor was Chicago's superior shot conversion: four shots on target from 1.48 xG (including two first-half goals from two attempts) compared to Portland's two on target from 0.99 xG. Despite Portland's four corners to Chicago's zero and nearly 200 more passes (553 vs 354), the Timbers lacked penetration - only six of their 10 shots came inside the box. Andrew Gutman and Maren Haile-Selassie provided the key assists in Chicago's early blitz, while Brandon Bye's late assist (85') came too late for Portland.
