Stoke clinch win despite Blackburn's dominance
Blackburn’s 1-2 defeat to Stoke City was harsh given their statistical superiority. With 58% possession and an expected goals (xG) of 1.9 compared to Stoke’s 0.99, Blackburn created more and better chances, registering 14 total shots and six corners. However, their inability to convert cost them, managing just three shots on target. Stoke, despite being outplayed, were clinical, with Jack McGlynn’s 43rd-minute goal and Moussa Baradji’s 68th-minute own goal proving decisive.
The tactical story was one of Blackburn’s dominance in build-up play but inefficiency in the final third. Stoke, while less involved (42% possession), maximised their opportunities, scoring from two of their three shots on target. Blackburn’s late surge, culminating in Andri Guðjohnsen’s 87th-minute goal, was too little too late as Stoke’s defence held firm amid relentless pressure.
The key stat was Blackburn’s xG of 1.9 – significantly higher than their actual goal tally, highlighting their profligacy. Stoke’s ability to convert limited chances into goals was the difference, ensuring they left Ewood Park with all three points.
