Analysis The numbers behind the result
Fukuoka edged despite superior xG and territorial dominance
Avispa Fukuoka created the better chances (0.76 xG to 0.6) but were punished by Gamba Osaka's clinical finishing in a tight contest. Despite near-even possession (51%-49%), Fukuoka generated 15 shots (6 inside the box) to Gamba's 7, but only 3 on target. The hosts also committed three first-half yellow cards, disrupting their rhythm before Welton's 50th-minute opener against the run of play.
Yu Hashimoto's 75th-minute equaliser briefly rewarded Fukuoka's pressure, but Takashi Usami struck back within two minutes from Issam Jebali's assist – Gamba converting their only two big chances. While Fukuoka won more free kicks (14-11) and blocked six shots, Gamba's superior corner count (6-3) and off-ball runs (3 offsides to 0) proved decisive. The difference: Gamba scored twice from three shots on target, while Fukuoka needed seven attempts inside the box for one goal.
