Levante
Levante tore up the script with a 3-1 victory over Athletic Club in La Liga’s sixth round, Roger Brugué’s deadly first-half double and Karl Etta Eyong’s stoppage-time strike sealing a famous win after Aymeric Laporte’s red card tilted the game.
Levante’s Lightning Start Stuns Athletic
The Estadi Ciutat de València erupted after just 20 minutes when Brugué pounced on Daniel Requena’s cutback, his first-time finish whipping past Unai Simón. Before the visitors could regroup, the striker struck again two minutes later – a predatory near-post header from Oriol Rey’s whipped cross leaving Athletic shellshocked.
Basque Fightback Cut Short by Laporte Madness
After halftime changes, Athletic Club halved the deficit in the 67th minute when Álex Berenguer buried a penalty after Maroan Sannadi was fouled. Momentum swung until Laporte’s moment of madness – the defender chopping down Iván Romero off the ball in the 73rd minute, earning a straight red that killed Athletic’s revival.
Levante Seal Famous La Liga Triumph
With the extra man, Levante suffocated Athletic’s possession game. Karl Etta Eyong’s lung-bursting run in the 98th minute capped the victory, slotting home after Simón parried Thiago Cruz’s drive. The stats told the brutal truth – Athletic’s 62% possession yielded just 4 shots on target, Levante’s clinical edge proving decisive.
For Levante, this scalps a European contender and lifts them clear of danger. Athletic’s discipline collapsed when it mattered – Terzić’s side now winless in three. The echoes of Brugué’s brace will linger long in Valencia.
