Instituto Hold Boca 2-2 in Clausura Thriller

Instituto Cordoba and Boca Juniors shared the spoils in a breathless 2-2 draw that saw the underdogs twice lead before being pegged back in this Liga Profesional Argentina Clausura Round 12 classic.

Instituto’s Early Blitz Rattles Boca

The Estadio Monumental de Alta Cordoba erupted after just 14 minutes when Fernando Alarcón pounced to give Instituto a shock lead. The home fans barely had time to catch their breath before Gustavo Abregú’s yellow card eight minutes later – a warning sign of the physical battle unfolding.

Valencia Strikes Back for Boca Juniors

Boca’s quality told just 60 seconds later as Enner Valencia, the veteran Ecuadorian striker, levelled with a clinical finish. The visitors began turning their 69% possession into chances, but Instituto’s three-man defence held firm through a frantic first half.

Galván Restores Instituto’s Lead

The second half exploded into life when Jonathan Galván powered home Leonel Mosevich’s assist just three minutes after the restart. Instituto’s compact 3-4-2-1 formation frustrated Boca, with Williams Alarcón’s booking summing up their growing frustration.

Merentiel Rescues Point for Boca

Boca boss Rodrigo Arruabarrena’s double substitution proved inspired – Miguel Merentiel needed just 56 seconds after coming on to latch onto Lautaro Blanco’s pass and make it 2-2. The final half-hour became a war of attrition, with five yellow cards brandished as both teams threw bodies into every challenge.

What This Result Means

For Instituto Cordoba, this valiant display against one of Argentina’s giants proves their mid-table security isn’t by accident. Diego Flores’ men defended heroically, making 15 clearances and throwing themselves into 7 blocked shots. Boca Juniors will rue dropping points despite dominating possession, leaving them with work to do in the Clausura title race. The introduction of Leandro Paredes from the bench couldn’t quite inspire a winner, but Boca’s fighting spirit keeps them in touch with the leaders.
