Carrascal Strike Seals Flamengo’s 1-0 Derby Win Over Fluminense

Flamengo claimed crucial Rio bragging rights with a gritty 1-0 victory over bitter rivals Fluminense in a tense Serie A Matchweek 30 encounter at Maracanã, settled by Jorge Carrascal’s 65th-minute strike.

The derby crackled with hostility from the first whistle – Erick Pulgar and Luciano Acosta earning early bookings in a frenetic opening half where Fluminense’s 57% possession yielded just one shot on target against Flamengo’s deep block.

Flamengo Weather The Fluminense Storm

The visitors thought their control told when Rodrigo Castillo bundled home on 54 minutes, only for VAR to chalk it off for a marginal offside – a pivotal moment that saw Agustín Canobbio booked for dissent moments later as tempers frayed.

Fluminense’s frustration grew when Carrascal struck against the run of play, sweeping home Lucas Paquetá’s cutback after Marcelo’s marauding run exploited space behind tiring full-back Guilherme Arana.

Carrascal The Derby Hero

The Colombian’s crisp finish sparked bedlam in the Rubro-Negro end, Flamengo suddenly playing with the swagger of a side who’d won 18 of their last 20 home league games – goalkeeper Rossi denying Hulk late on to preserve the lead.

Fluminense’s discipline crumbled late on, Ignácio da Silva and Arana both seeing yellow in a desperate finale where their 12 shots yielded just 0.68 xG, per FotMob – a damning indictment of their blunt attack.

What This Means For Both Rio Giants

The result sees Flamengo climb to third, just four points off leaders Palmeiras with eight games left, while Fluminense’s winless run extends to five matches – their title challenge now hanging by a thread.

For Jardim’s men, this was proof they can grind when the samba football isn’t flowing. For Marcão’s side? Another chapter in their recent derby torment – Flamengo securing a fourth straight win in this fixture without conceding.
