Dinamo Zagreb took a giant stride towards the Champions League playoff round with a crushing 5-0 victory over Lithuanian outsiders Kauno Žalgiris in their third qualifying round first leg at Stadion Maksimir. The Croatians turned what could have been a nervy European night into a procession, their superior quality and physicality overwhelming opponents who simply couldn’t cope once the floodgates opened.
Dinamo Zagreb’s Early Control Turns to Domination
For half an hour, the home side’s patient build-up met stubborn resistance, Kauno’s compact 4-4-2 blocking central avenues. Then Miha Zajc changed everything. On 31 minutes, Luka Stojkovic’s whipped cross found the Slovenian midfielder arriving late to thump a header past Švedkauskas from 10 yards. Before the Lithuanians could regroup, Scott McKenna doubled the lead two minutes later, the Scottish defender rising highest to nod in Matteo Pérez Vinlöf’s corner at the near post.
Kauno Žalgiris’ Collapse After Half-Time
Coach Cerniauskas made two changes at the break, but Dinamo smelled blood. Mateo Lisica made it 3-0 six minutes after the restart, finishing clinically after Josip Mišić’s incisive pass split the defence. The Croatian champions were now playing with swagger – Stojkovic deservedly got his goal on 76 minutes, lashing home after Dion Drena Beljo’s clever lay-off. Substitute Luka Kacavenda rubbed salt in the wounds deep into stoppage time, his deflected strike completing the rout.
What This Means For Both Sides
For Dinamo, this was the perfect start to their European campaign – a statement victory that effectively seals their playoff place with the return leg in Lithuania now a formality. Kauno Žalgiris’ fairytale European run looks over, their defenders left dazed by the Croatian onslaught. The only consolation? A yellow card for Anton Kalik that summed up their frustrating night. Dinamo can already start planning for tougher tests ahead.
