Igor Gomes Stuns Coritiba as Atletico-MG Claim 1-0 Win

Atletico-MG edged Coritiba 1-0 in a fraught Serie A encounter that exploded into life with a 78th-minute thunderbolt from Igor Gomes. The Mineirão erupted as Gomes latched onto Natanael Milouski’s inch-perfect pass, drilling home to break Coritiba’s resistance and ignite Atletico’s European charge.

Atletico-MG’s Relentless Press

From the first whistle, Atletico-MG’s 58% possession told the story of a side hellbent on domination. Their 22 shots – 10 on target – rained down on Pedro Luccas’ goal, the Coritiba keeper pulling off nine saves to keep the hosts at bay. Mamady Cisse’s movement troubled the defence all night, while Tomas Pérez threaded dangerous passes through lines that begged for a finishing touch.

Coritiba’s Valiant Resistance

Fernando Seabra’s men dug their trenches, with Bruno Melo and Thiago Santos throwing themselves into last-ditch blocks. When Gomes finally beat Luccas, it was seconds after Sebastián Gómez had entered the fray – the substitution barely registered before Atletico’s dagger blow. Coritiba’s discipline frayed in stoppage time as Melo and Santos saw yellow, their frustration boiling over after holding firm for so long.

What This Means for Serie A

For Atletico-MG, Gomes’ strike keeps alive dreams of continental football next season, the three points lifting them into the top six. Coritiba’s fifth straight away defeat leaves them glancing nervously over their shoulders – their 42% possession and 0.69 xG showing a team struggling to impose themselves on the road. When these sides meet again in March, survival may well be on the line.
