Madrid Stun Roma 4-3 in Chaotic Champions League Comeback

AS Roma 3-4 Real Madrid: Champions League Drama in Eternal City

Real Madrid staged a jaw-dropping comeback to beat AS Roma 4-3 in their UEFA Champions League League Stage clash, turning the Stadio Olimpico from a cauldron of joy into a pit of despair with two goals in the last five minutes.

AS Roma’s Early Fury

The Giallorossi erupted after 20 minutes when Marten de Roon thundered in Matias Soulé’s cutback, sending the Curva Sud into delirium. But Madrid’s response was ice-cold – Kylian Mbappé levelling five minutes later after Yan Diomande’s darting run carved Roma open.

Gasps turned to roars when Paulo Dybala’s half-time introduction sparked Roma. Donyell Malen struck twice in six second-half minutes – first tapping in Rodrigo Mora’s cross (51′), then curling a beauty after Soulé’s threaded pass (57′). At 3-1, the Stadio Olimpico swayed with belief.

Real Madrid’s Relentless Resurgence

José Mourinho’s triple substitution changed everything. Teenager Endrick Felipe Moreira de Sousa replaced Vinícius and Carlos Espí entered to devastating effect. Espí pounced on a defensive error (83′) before Endrick slotted Arda Güler’s through ball (85′) – the 18-year-old Brazilian igniting pandemonium in the away end.

Then, in stoppage time, Antonio Rüdiger rose highest to meet Güler’s corner (90′), completing a collapse that left Roma’s players slumped on the turf. The stats told the tale: Madrid’s 16 shots to Roma’s 14, but crucially, 8 on target to Roma’s 7.

What This Means for Both Sides

Roma’s 54% possession meant nothing as defensive fragility cost them dearly. For Madrid, this was Mourinho magic – overcoming odds with ruthless efficiency. The result leaves both sides on three points in the League Stage, setting up group games where neither can afford defensive lapses.
