Argentinos JRS Edge Tigre 2-1 in Clausura Thriller

Argentinos JRS survived a VAR penalty scare and late Tigre onslaught to claim a vital 2-1 victory in Sunday’s Liga Profesional Argentina Clausura showdown at Diego Armando Maradona Stadium. The win lifts Nicolás Diez’s side into the top four, while Tigre’s playoff hopes took another dent despite controlling 55% possession.

Argentinos JRS Start Like a Hurricane

Kevin Gutiérrez needed just six minutes to ignite the home crowd, sweeping home Matías Giménez’s cutback after Tigre’s defence evaporated. The early blow stunned Diego Dabove’s men, who conceded again three minutes before half-time when Gastón Verón’s glancing header from Sebastián Prieto’s free-kick doubled the lead.

Tigre’s Penalty Agony Before the Break

As rain began lashing the pitch, Tigre were handed a lifeline when VAR spotted Federico Álvarez’s clumsy challenge on Jabes Saralegui. The tension thickened when Saralegui himself stepped up… only to sky his 45+5th minute penalty into the stands, leaving the visitors crestfallen at halftime.

Dramatic Second Half Twist

Jerónimo Domina reignited Tigre’s hopes in the 57th minute, tapping in Saralegui’s redemption cross before the assist-maker was immediately substituted. Suddenly it was Argentinos JRS clinging on, with Franco Paredes earning a 76th-minute yellow for time-wasting – one of 14 home fouls that disrupted Tigre’s rhythm.

Diez’s Defensive Masterstroke

Despite facing 13 total shots (8 inside the box), Argentinos JRS’s backline held firm. Center-back pairing Miguel Mendoza and Franco Álvarez made 17 clearances between them, while keeper Gonzalo Siri’s three crucial saves preserved the lead – including a stunning 83rd-minute stop from Domina.

The final whistle sparked delirious celebrations as Argentinos JRS leapfrogged three teams into fourth. For Tigre, their seventh Clausura defeat leaves them marooned in mid-table, their 13 shots yielding just one goal – a recurring nightmare this campaign.
