Ajax Held 1-1 by Gritty NEC in Eredivisie Stalemate

Ajax were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by battling NEC Nijmegen in their Eredivisie Round 8 clash at Johan Cruijff ArenA, dropping crucial points despite dominating possession and chances.

Ajax Fly Out the Blocks

The hosts erupted after just 7 minutes when Tolu Arokodare latched onto Jorthy Mokio’s threaded pass, slotting coolly past NEC goalkeeper Gabriel Crettaz. Mokio’s celebration earned him an early yellow card for shirt removal, foreshadowing the scrappy nature of this encounter.

NEC Nijmegen Strike Back

Against the run of play, NEC equalised on 19 minutes when Tjaronn Chery converted a penalty after a VAR-reviewed handball. The visitors grew into the game, with Bryan Linssen’s yellow card for a reckless challenge the only blemish on their disciplined first-half defensive display.

Ajax’s Frustration Mounts

Míchel’s side penned NEC back in the second half, their 61% possession yielding 18 shots but only 5 on target. Key substitutions like Marcos Leonardo for goalscorer Arokodare failed to spark the breakthrough. Abdellah Ouazane’s yellow card for dissent summed up Ajax’s growing irritation as Nijmegen’s defence stood firm.

What This Means for Both Clubs

For Ajax, this feels like two points dropped in their title chase, despite outshooting NEC 18-8. NEC Nijmegen will celebrate a hard-earned point at Dutch football’s cathedral, Tjaronn Chery’s penalty securing a result that keeps them comfortably mid-table. Both coaches face selection dilemmas after disjointed attacking performances, with Ajax needing more cutting edge and NEC greater creativity.
