Celtic’s Champions League Charge Begins in Style
Celtic took a commanding step towards the Champions League group stages with a 3-0 demolition of Lask Linz in their play-off first leg at Parkhead, Benjamin Nygren and Camilo Duran (2) writing their names in lights on a night when the Austrian visitors were simply outclassed.
Nygren Sparks Celtic’s European Fire
The roar that greeted Nygren’s 26th-minute opener could be heard across Glasgow’s East End, the Swedish winger capping Celtic’s early dominance with a clinical finish after Lask’s defence failed to clear their lines. Martin O’Neill’s side, controlling 64% of possession, turned the screw relentlessly – their 17 total shots to Lask’s 20 flattered a visiting side who only truly threatened on the counter.
Duran Double Seals Lask’s Fate
When Duran doubled the lead in the 38th minute, Parkhead erupted in belief. The Colombian striker’s movement proved too sharp for Lask’s back three, his finish too precise for Lukas Jungwirth. After the break, Duran put the tie potentially beyond reach with his second in the 67th minute, Nygren turning provider this time with a clever cutback. Lask’s frustration boiled over when Kasper Jørgensen saw yellow for a late tackle as Celtic’s substitutes – including returning hero Kieran Tierney – saw out a clean sheet with professionalism.
What This Means for Both Sides
For Celtic, this was the perfect start to their European campaign – a three-goal cushion to take to Austria where they’ll expect to finish the job. Lask Linz, despite mustering eight shots on target, now face mission impossible in the second leg. Dietmar Kuhbauer’s side must produce something extraordinary at the Raiffeisen Arena to prevent Celtic marching into the group stages with this emphatic statement of intent.
