Riga Edge Ararat-Armenia 3-2 in Champions League Qualifying Thriller

UEFA Champions League · 1st Qualifying Round

Riga 3 – 2 Ararat-Armenia

Riga Strike Early in Champions League Qualifier

Riga held their nerve in a breathless 3-2 victory over Ararat-Armenia in the UEFA Champions League 1st Qualifying Round, surviving a late onslaught after establishing an early two-goal cushion. The Latvian champions’ dreams of European progression remain alive after a night of high drama at Skonto Stadium.

The hosts exploded from the blocks, Brazilian full-back Iago Siqueira breaking the deadlock after 14 minutes with a thunderous finish from Muhammed Badamosi’s cutback. Nine minutes later, Ahmed Ankrah doubled the lead with a predatory strike, leaving Ararat-Armenia’s defence in disarray.

Ararat-Armenia Fight Back Before Half-Time

Edgar Grigoryan’s 34th-minute yellow card for a cynical foul on Badamosi typified the Armenian side’s growing frustration, but they found a lifeline when Zhirayr Shaghoyan pounced on a defensive error to pull one back before the break. Riga’s composure wavered as Oulad M’Hand and Orlando Galo both saw yellow in quick succession.

The second half became a war of attrition, with Riga goalkeeper Krišjānis Zviedris producing two vital saves to deny Sandro Lima. At the other end, João Bravim kept Ararat-Armenia in it with a stunning stop to deny Badamosi after a marauding run from Raivis Jurkovskis.

Late Drama as Riga Survive Scare

With tension mounting, substitute Artur Serobyan sent the travelling fans into raptures with an 83rd-minute equaliser, ghosting between defenders to head home Hugo Oliveira’s cross. But just as extra time loomed, Paulo rose highest to nod in an 89th-minute corner, triggering delirium among the home supporters.

The result leaves Ararat-Armenia’s European dreams hanging by a thread ahead of next week’s second leg in Yerevan. For Riga’s coach Adrian Gula, it was a night that showcased both his side’s attacking verve and defensive fragility – qualities they’ll need to balance carefully to progress.
