Yalcouye Stuns Getafe as Brighton Snatch 1-0 Europa Win

Brighton Edge Past Getafe in Tense Europa Conference League Clash

Brighton secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Getafe in the UEFA Europa Conference League League Stage – 3, with Mamadou Yalcouye’s second-half strike proving decisive in a tight contest at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez. The Seagulls showed grit and determination to claim all three points in Spain, extending their unbeaten run in the competition.

First Half Frustration for Brighton

The opening 45 minutes saw Brighton dominate possession with 61% of the ball, but they struggled to test David Soria in the Getafe goal. Despite registering 7 shots, only 1 was on target as the hosts’ compact defensive shape frustrated Roberto De Zerbi’s side. Getafe threatened on the counter, forcing Bart Verbruggen into 2 smart saves to keep the scores level at the break.

Yalcouye Breaks the Deadlock

The game sprang to life in the 64th minute when Mamadou Yalcouye fired Brighton ahead. Costinha’s incisive pass split the Getafe defense, allowing Yalcouye to confidently slot home from 12 yards out. The goal sparked wild celebrations in the away end as Brighton’s travelling fans finally had something to cheer after a patient display.

Getafe Push for an Equalizer

Getafe responded positively to going behind, introducing Enes Ünal and Mario Martín in search of a leveller. But despite throwing men forward in the closing stages, they couldn’t find a way past Verbruggen. The Brighton keeper produced a stunning reflex save to deny Ünal in the 81st minute, preserving his side’s slender advantage.

Brighton Hold Firm for Vital Win

The Seagulls defended resolutely in the final minutes, picking up 4 yellow cards as they battled to hold onto their lead. De Zerbi’s changes proved effective, with Marc De Cuyper and Maxime O’Riley helping to see out the game. Brighton’s 80% passing accuracy and superior expected goals (1.64 to 0.26) highlighted their dominance in a hard-fought encounter.

This victory leaves Brighton well-placed in the League Stage, while Getafe will rue missed opportunities. The Seagulls’ resolve and quality proved the difference in a tight contest, with Yalcouye’s moment of composure making the crucial breakthrough. Both teams now turn their attention to Matchday 4, still very much in the hunt for knockout round qualification.
