OFI Stun Hapoel Beer Sheva 2-0 in Europa League

Hapoel Beer Sheva 0-2 OFI: Greek Grit Stuns Turner Stadium

OFI pulled off a textbook smash-and-grab in the Europa League, silencing Turner Stadium with a 2-0 victory over Hapoel Beer Sheva that flipped Group G on its head. The Israeli side’s 62% possession counted for nothing as Achilleas Poungouras and Taxiarchis Fountas delivered knockout blows either side of halftime.

Hapoel’s Possession Meets OFI’s Precision

The hosts started like a side who’d read their own press clippings, Forson Amankwah testing Kristijan Krizmanić within five minutes. But OFI’s back three held firm, Nikolaos Athanasiou earning an early yellow for a tactical foul that set the tone. When Poungouras rose highest to nod home a looping cross in first-half stoppage time, you could hear a pin drop in the Negev.

Fountas Turns the Screw

Roni Kojok’s triple substitution on the hour mark smacked of desperation. It backfired spectacularly when Athanasiou – the villain turned architect – slipped Fountas through to dink over Omri Glazer in the 56th minute. The Greek striker’s celebration said it all: finger to lips as 15,000 voices fell silent.

Stat Attack Tells the Story

Hapoel’s 16 shots (4 on target) versus OFI’s 11 (3 on target) masked the truth. The visitors’ xG of 0.75 to Hapoel’s 1.52 revealed a side that took their chances when it mattered. Glazer’s solitary save compared to Krizmanić’s four told its own story – OFI’s goalkeeper stood tall when called upon.

What This Means

For OFI, this smash-and-grab puts them right back in the knockout conversation. As for Hapoel, their Europa League hopes now hang by a thread after failing to score for the second straight game. The Israeli side must rediscover their cutting edge fast, while the Greeks can dare to dream.
