Zeneli Stars as Union St. Gilloise Stun Celta Vigo 2-1

Celta Vigo’s hopes of Europa League progression took a crushing blow as Union St. Gilloise emerged 2-1 victors in a pulsating fourth round League Stage encounter at Estadio de Balaídos. The Belgians’ clinical finishing proved decisive against a Galician side that dominated possession but couldn’t make it count.

Celta Vigo’s Early Promise Crushed

The home side started brightly, Pablo Durán Fernández sending the Balaídos faithful into raptures in the 11th minute with a composed finish from Sergio Carreira’s pinpoint assist. Celta’s 58% possession and 13 total shots showed their intent, but Union St. Gilloise’s Besfort Zeneli had other ideas. The Kosovan striker equalised in the 35th minute, finishing coolly after Adem Zorgane’s incisive pass.

Union St. Gilloise’s Clinical Edge

Zeneli struck again just four minutes after the break, this time from Kevin Rodriguez’s clever layoff. Despite being second best in possession, the visitors’ two lethal finishes from three shots on target demonstrated their ruthlessness. Celta boss Claudio Giráldez threw on Iago Aspas and Ilaix Moriba in the 60th minute, desperate for inspiration.

Celta’s Frustration Mounts

The hosts surged forward, winning 11 corners to Union’s solitary one, but couldn’t find a way past a resolute Belgian defence. Zeneli’s missed penalty in the 80th minute after a VAR-confirmed handball briefly reignited hope, but Celta’s frustration boiled over when Durán received a late booking. Union managed the game expertly in the closing stages, their 42% possession belying their tactical nous.

What This Means For Both Teams

Union St. Gilloise’s victory puts them in a strong position in the Europa League League Stage, their clinical finishing proving the difference. For Celta Vigo, this gut-wrenching defeat leaves their European hopes hanging by a thread. The passion and possession were there, but the cutting edge deserted them when it mattered most. Both teams now look to regroup for the next round of fixtures, knowing every point could prove crucial in their European ambitions.
