Gimnasia L.P. beat Belgrano Cordoba 2-1 in Clausura Round 16 of the Liga Profesional Argentina on a November evening that belonged entirely to the hosts’ ruthless opening minutes, then spiralled into a test of nerve as the visitors poured forward in desperation.

Gimnasia Strike in the Storm

The match ignited before most supporters had settled into their seats. In the sixth minute, Lucas Janson received possession and finished with the kind of clinical efficiency that separates the sharp from the sluggish—Gimnasia 1-0. The goal arrived as a shock to Belgrano Cordoba’s system, and worse was coming. Twenty-one minutes later, Agustin Auzmendi swept past the Belgrano defence to make it 2-0, the assist falling to Matías Melluso. VAR confirmed the goal. Gimnasia, despite controlling just 36 per cent of the ball, had built a mountain.

The early onslaught revealed something uncomfortable about Belgrano Cordoba’s shape. They arrived as the possession holders—their formation under coach R. Zielinski designed to dominate territory—but found themselves chasing ghosts. Alcides Benitez collected a yellow card in the chaos of the opening moments, a sign of the chaos Gimnasia had imposed.

Belgrano Cordoba’s Half-Time Lifeline

What made Belgrano’s task bearable, what kept them alive, came at the stroke of half-time. Alcides Benitez, the same man cautioned in the opening minutes, restored hope with a goal in the 45th minute—2-1. The deficit remained, but the narrative had shifted. Belgrano Cordoba had mustered 64 per cent possession and 20 shots by the final whistle; they had created chances in waves. The expected goals data told the story: Belgrano generated 1.64xG to Gimnasia’s 1.43xG. On another evening, that might have been enough.

Yet Gimnasia’s goalkeeper kept faith. He made five saves to Belgrano’s two. Janson had already departed by then, replaced in the 65th minute as Gimnasia tightened their grip.

Belgrano’s Desperate Push Falls Short

The second half became a siege. Belgrano Cordoba threw bodies forward, accumulated corners—seven in total—and peppered shots from both inside and outside the box. Fourteen shots from inside the area arrived without answer. Nicolas Fernández, Leonardo Morales, and Adrian Spörle all trudged toward the referee’s notebook, gathering yellow cards as Belgrano’s frustration mounted. Fresh legs came off the bench: Santiago Longo, Federico Ricca, Emiliano Rigoni, each arriving in the hope of fracturing Gimnasia’s resolve.

But Gimnasia held. They withdrew deeper as the minutes elapsed, their shape becoming increasingly compact. Three Gimnasia players—Nicolas Barros Schelotto, Ignacio Miramon, and Facundo Di Biasi—joined the cautioned list, but none were sent off. The discipline remained.

What This Means for Both Sides

For Gimnasia L.P., this was a masterclass in efficiency. Two early goals, then the art of defending a lead against relentless pressure. They move forward in Clausura Round 16 with three points earned through ruthlessness. For Belgrano Cordoba, it is a painful exercise in wastefulness—sixty-four per cent possession, twenty shots, 1.64 expected goals, and nothing to show but a single goal and the taste of what might have been.
