Own Goal Heartbreak as Newells and Santa Fe Share Points 1-1

Newells Old Boys and Union Santa Fe shared the points in a 1-1 Liga Profesional Argentina Clausura thriller, a result that felt like a dagger to the visitors after Ignacio Isla’s 76th-minute own goal canceled out Juan Pablo Ludueña’s opener.

Santa Fe’s First-Half Frustration

The visitors from Santa Fe came to play. Julián Palacios’ 17th-minute booking set the tone for a physical battle, but it was their attacking intent that stood out – 12 total shots to Newells’ 6, 5 on target versus 2. Yet for all their dominance (61% possession), Newells keeper Reinatti stood tall with 4 crucial saves.

Ludueña’s Moment of Magic

Just before the hour mark, the breakthrough. Marcelo Estigarribia slipped a defense-splitting pass to Juan Pablo Ludueña, who buried it (59′). The scorer then saw yellow 10 minutes later for a reckless challenge as tensions boiled – Santa Fe accumulating 4 yellows to Newells’ eventual 4.

The Cruel Twist

Then, football’s cruel poetry. In the 76th minute, pressure told as Santa Fe defender Isla turned the ball into his own net under no pressure. The Marcelo Bielsa stand erupted. Santa Fe’s bench collapsed in disbelief. 1-1 against the run of play.

What This Means

For Newells, this smash-and-grab keeps them in touch with the Clausura pace-setters – a point salvaged from 61% possession but just 0.38 xG. Santa Fe will rue 1.21 xG yielding just a point. Both teams remain mid-table, but the psychological scars of this one will linger.
