Earthquakes Edge Past RSL 2-1 in MLS Thriller

San Jose Earthquakes 2-1 Real Salt Lake – MLS Regular Season Match Report

San Jose Earthquakes struck early and held their nerve to secure a crucial 2-1 victory over Real Salt Lake in a breathless MLS Regular Season encounter at PayPal Park. The Halloween night thriller saw the Quakes jump to a two-goal lead inside 17 minutes before surviving a second-half onslaught from a reshuffled RSL side.

San Jose’s Lightning Start Sets the Tone

Ousseni Bouda sent shockwaves through the stadium after just 120 seconds, latching onto a loose ball to slam home the opener past Rafael Cabral. The Earthquakes doubled their advantage on 17 minutes when Benjamin Kikanovic – later forced off injured – finished Jamar Ricketts’ cutback with surgical precision. Bruce Arena’s men were relentless, racking up 11 first-half shots as RSL’s 3-4-2-1 shape collapsed under the pressure.

Real Salt Lake’s Fightback Falls Short

Juan Sanabria gave the visitors hope on 23 minutes, tapping in Sam Junqua’s cross to halve the deficit. Pablo Mastroeni’s halftime triple substitution injected urgency – Chadwick Booth and Aiden Hezarkhani both made immediate impacts – but San Jose’s defensive resilience shone through. Reid Roberts and N.Tsakiris picked up crucial yellows to disrupt RSL’s rhythm, while goalkeeper Emmanuel Edwards made four vital saves including a fingertip stop from Stijn Spierings’ late piledriver.

What This MLS Result Means

The win sees San Jose climb the Western Conference table, their clinical finishing (5 shots on target from 1.79 xG) proving decisive. For RSL, their 56% possession counted for little despite late pressure – Alexandros Katranis’ injury-time yellow epitomizing their frustration. Both teams face playoff-chasing opponents next: the Earthquakes meet Austin FC while Salt Lake host LA Galaxy in matches that could define their postseason fates.
